NYS Senator Calls For Checks At Certain Camps

Office of NYS Senator David Carlucci

A New York state Senator was in Rockland County Friday afternoon, talking about improving safety at certain day camps.

Senator David Carlucci gathered with area camp owners to talk about legislation he has introduced to close a loophole when it comes to so-called single-purpose day camps, which are summer camps dedicated to one indoor or outdoor activity for kids under the age of 16. Carlucci, an Independent Democrat, says single-purpose day camps are not required to check if their employees and volunteers are listed in the sex-offender registry or in the statewide central register of child abuse, and his legislation would require such checks. He says these camps have also been faulted for a lack of regulatory oversight, such as having no regular inspections, no minimum age requirement for counselors, and no staffing ratios. Queens Democrat Michael Miller is sponsoring the bill in the Assembly.
