NYS Lawmaker Calls On DoD To Take Responsibility For PFOS Contamination

WAMC, Allison Dunne

A New York state lawmaker is among the latest to call on the U.S. Department of Defense to take responsibility for the PFOS drinking water contamination in Newburgh.

Democratic Assemblyman Frank Skartados, whose district includes the city and town of Newburgh, has penned a letter to the Secretary of Defense, expressing concern over recent reports that the Department of Defense is seeking to avoid responsibility for the PFOS contamination at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh. New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation in August declared the base a superfund site, and DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos recently told WAMC he thinks New York will be in court forcing DoD to pay for the state’s expenses under the superfund designation.
