NYS Bill To Protect River From Anchorages Awaits Gov's Signature

WAMC, Allison Dunne

A bill to safeguard the Hudson River from proposed anchorage sites passed the New York state Senate and Assembly this week. And now supporters are urging Governor Andrew Cuomo to sign the measure into law.

With a U.S. Coast Guard proposal to establish up to 10 anchorage sites in the Hudson River between Yonkers and Kingston, two Hudson Valley state lawmakers had introduced bills in their respective houses protect the Hudson River and local communities. Republican Senator Sue Serino and Democratic Assemblymember Didi Barrett now are urging the governor to make signing the bill a priority. Specifically, the lawmakers say the bill would amend the state’s navigation law relating to the establishment of so-called ‘tanker-avoidance zones’ to consider waterfront communities and significant natural habitats, in addition to navigation safety.
