Student-led teams from three upstate New York colleges have been awarded $1 million each for their proposals to harness renewable energy to power their campuses. One winner is a team from a Hudson Valley college.

The winners announced Monday are teams at Dutchess County-based Bard College, University at Buffalo and Broome Community College. The Bard project will spur installation of micro-hydroelectric power generators. The Buffalo team will install solar projects around the city. The Broome project will use geothermal energy to heat and cool campus buildings. The contest was created by Governor Andrew Cuomo’s administration and coordinated by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. Cuomo has set a target of producing half of the state's electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
