New York Governor Andrew Cuomo Thursday announced more than $1.6 million in annual funding to create first-of-their-kind clubhouses for teens and young adults battling substance abuse and addiction. One clubhouse will be in the Hudson Valley.

The YMCA of Yonkers is receiving $250,000 for a new substance use disorder clubhouse. The idea is to provide services in a safe place where young people in recovery or at risk for substance use disorders can support each other. Yonkers joins six other regions in the state in developing community-based clubhouses intended to promote peer-driven supports and services in a non-clinical setting. The seven organizations receiving funding will provide such services as homework help and tutoring; college and job preparation; sports, fitness and, group entertainment activities; and peer mentoring.
