NY Senator Proposes Bill To Discount College Student Fares

Senator Charles Schumer is proposing legislation to establish a national college student discounted transit fare program.

The New York senator says the program would alleviate the financial burden for students commuting to and from college or grad school using mass transit.

His legislation would provide funding to transit agencies to offset the cost of providing discounted student fares. Schumer says the discounts would be at least 25 percent.

He says some New York students pay more than $1,000 a year for commuter train, subway and bus tickets.
