In North Adams, Massachusetts, budget season is underway. First-term mayor Tom Bernard just checked off a major decision for the year with the appointment of Jason Wood as the city’s new police chief earlier this month. Now, Bernard has presented a more than $44 million budget to the city council finance subcommittee. Bernard spoke with WAMC about the spending plan’s focus and the ongoing challenge of downtown revitalization.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018, following stints at WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Western Massachusetts, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. His free time is spent with his cat Harry, experimental electronic music, and exploring the woods.
