The state attorney general has opened an investigation into New York City's Board of Elections and complaints about voting irregularities in Tuesday's primaries.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says his office received more than 1,000 complaints at its voter's hotline.

On Tuesday afternoon, the office said the most common complaint came from people who tried to vote but were told they were unregistered. Others complained they were told they weren't registered with a particular political party and couldn't vote in the primary of their choice.

The board did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Schneiderman says his office will start inquiries in other areas where irregularities appeared to be unusually high.

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump won the Democratic and Republican presidential primaries in New York by wide margins.
