The Nassau Democratic Committee has unanimously endorsed state Assemblyman Todd Kaminsky to run for the seat vacated by convicted ex-New York Senate Leader Dean Skelos.

Newsday says Nassau Democratic Party Chairman Jay Jacobs cited Kaminsky's experience for the committee's selection on Tuesday.

Kaminsky, of Long Beach on Long Island, was acting deputy chief of the Public Integrity Section for the U.S. Attorney Office's Eastern District in New York. He prosecuted former state Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada Jr. who was convicted of embezzlement.

Kaminsky was elected to the Assembly in 2014.

The party cannot officially nominate Kaminsky until Gov. Andrew Cuomo schedules a special election.

The Nassau Republican Committee says it plans to begin screening candidates soon.

Skelos, a Republican, was convicted of bribery, extortion and conspiracy charges.
