NARAL Says Gov. Baker Should Call Abortion Clinic Violence Terrorism

Planned Parenthood in St. Paul

An abortion rights group is calling on Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker to urge the federal Department of Justice to treat violence at abortion clinics as acts of domestic terrorism.

NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts Executive Director Megan Amundson said Tuesday the Justice Department is able to bring more resources to investigate acts of violence when that violence is classified as domestic terrorism.

Amundson pointed to last month's shooting at a Colorado Planned Parenthood that left three people dead.

Baker said he would defer to federal standards, but said whether or not an attempt to terrorize, maim, damage and hurt innocent people meets a specific definition is beside the point. He said they are still terrorist acts.

Massachusetts has witnessed such violence.

In December 1994, two receptionists were killed at Planned Parenthood clinics in Brookline. Five others were wounded.
