Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver will end his long reign as the head of the Assembly on Monday, say the Democratic members of the Assembly who announced they’ll hold a new election for Speaker on February 10th.

Assembly Majority Leader Joe Morelle, who says he will serve as acting speaker  beginning on Monday  says new elections for Speaker will be held February 10th.  He was less clear, though on how exactly Sheldon Silver will be leaving, saying only.

“There will be vacancy in the office of Speaker,” Morelle said.

Morelle and others confirmed that silver will remain as Speaker until Monday, but would not say whether the speaker would formally hand in his resignation or whether the Assembly Democrats will vote to oust him form the post. Silver’s spokesman  said Silver was in his office , but he did not speak publicly.
