Memorial Won't Be Ready For This 9/11 Anniversary

WAMC

Just days before the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks a groundbreaking for a permanent memorial was held in Springfield, Massachusetts.

When plans were unveiled for the monument that includes an i-beam from the World Trade Center, the hope was to dedicate it on this year’s anniversary.

But Mayor Domenic Sarno explained that Riverfront Park, where the monument will be, is still undergoing an extensive renovation and is not accessible to the public.

"We did not want to rush this solemn event, this solemn memorial," said Sarno. " We want to continue to do it the right way, the respectful way."

The 9/11 memorial will include the names of 498 first responders who died in the terrorist attacks.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
