At Least 29 Vermont Communities Say No to Tar Sands

Organizers say at least 29 Vermont communities have voiced their opposition to any possibility of shipping tar sands oil by pipeline through the state.

At annual town meetings on Tuesday, voters passed nonbinding resolutions in those communities. Environmentalists have raised concerns about potential spills and increased greenhouse gas emissions.

The resolutions said they did not want tar sands oil or its derivatives from oils fields in Alberta, Canada, moved through a pipeline across the Northeast Kingdom.

Portland Pipe Line Corp. ships crude oil through the pipeline between Maine and Montreal. Company officials have said they have no active plans to reverse the flow, but it's always looking for new business opportunities.

None of the Northeast Kingdom towns where the pipe is located took up the resolution.
