The National Sports Academy in Lake Placid is closing at the end of May after graduation and won't re-open in the fall.

The announcement by the school's leaders comes four months after the academy declared bankruptcy.

The Adirondack Daily Enterprise reports (http://bit.ly/1Rf9Ojl ) that school officials said they fought hard to keep the school alive for the upcoming academic year.

The academy has a legacy of teaching and training thousands of students in winter sports, such as hockey and skiing, and 23 of its students have gone on to become Olympians. That list includes gold medal-winning Nordic combined skier Bill Demong, luger Chris Mazdzer, and biathlete Haley Johnson.

The academy, founded in 1977, served grades 9-12 and postgraduates. Enrollment had dropped from 60 three years ago to 19.
