Officials are holding the first of four hearings seeking public input on how Vermont can begin implementing its long-term goal of getting 90 percent of the state's energy from renewable sources by 2050.
Last October, the state of Vermont released its long term Comprehensive Energy Plan, which outlined strategies and set a goal of obtaining 90-percent of the state’s total energy from renewable sources by 2050. Vermont Agency of Natural Resources Secretary Deb Markowitz chairs the Vermont Climate Cabinet.
The four forums across Vermont will share information and offer concrete ideas to implement projects in order to attain the goals in the energy plan. The first is tonight in Colchester. Vermont Natural Resources Council Energy Program Director Johanna Miller is coordinating the forums.
Johanna Miller says there are numerous challenges to meeting the 2050 goal, but they are not insurmountable.
Green Mountain College Associate Professor of Economics and Environmental Studies and Environmental Studies Program Director Steven Letendre says the 90 percent renewable by 2050 goal is viable.
The first forum on Vermont’s Comprehensive Energy Plan is at the Colchester High School this evening from 6 until 9. Subsequent meetings are scheduled at the Rutland Free Library, Windsor High School, and at National Life in Montpelier.
