New York’s first openly gay member of Congress has authored legislation to combat violence in the LGBTQ community.

One year after the deadly shooting June 12 at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, Democratic Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney announced the introduction of a bill to improve data collection on the sexual orientation and gender identity of victims of violent crimes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention operate the National Violent Death Reporting System, which collects a range of data on victims of violent crime. Maloney’s LGBT PRIDE Act, or Provide a Requirement to Improve Data Collection Efforts Act, authorizes $25 million to fund the effort.
