House Bill Looks to Protect Specialty Crop Farmers

Tuesday was National Agriculture Day, and a Congressman from New York took the opportunity to introduce a bipartisan bill to help specialty crop farmers.

Hudson Valley Representative Sean Patrick Maloney introduced his first bill, the CROP Act, or The Creating Reliability for Our Producers Act.

The Democrat says his legislation is co-sponsored by his Republican colleague further north in the state, Congressman Chris Gibson. The idea behind the Act is to encourage the development of new and improved insurance plans for underserved crops. Chris Pawelski, who owns Pawelski Farms in Orange County, likes the idea.

The House bill is similar to legislation previously introduced in the Senate, by New York Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand.
