An inflatable bounce house is not something typically associated with combating crime.

But fun activities, food, and music will be featured at a back-to-school event this Saturday in Holyoke, Massachusetts organized by the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department.

It is part of a safe neighborhood initiative where the strategy involves getting children from poor neighborhoods involved in activities so they don’t join gangs and commit violent crimes.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Ed Caisse of the sheriff’s department.
