With Harvey And Irma On The Mind, Remembering Hurricane Camille

Sep 6, 2017

With the recovery from Hurricane Harvey underway, there is growing concern about Hurricane Irma, a major storm that could hit Florida later this week.  It was just over 48 years ago that another deadly and destructive storm slammed into the southern U.S.

Hurricane Camille killed 259 people and laid waste to a large portion of the Gulf Coast. The storm also led to a change in how the federal government responded to natural disasters according to Union College associate professor of history Andrew Morris who is working on a book about government disaster response before and after Camille.

Morris spoke with WAMC News about his book, which is expected to be released in 2019.
