Pittsfield Mayor Linda Tyer with Andrea Harrington as the attorney declared victory in the Berkshire District Attorney Democratic primary, surrounded by her family.

Attorney Andrea Harrington declared victory in the Democratic primary for Berkshire District Attorney late Tuesday night moments after taking a concession call from incumbent DA Paul Caccaviello at her campaign party at a restaurant in downtown Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Harrington dedicated the win to her family and her supporters, offering her thanks "to everybody who voted for me, who voted in me, who believed in me, who believed that together we're going to build a new future for Berkshire County."

The tight race was decided by less than 600 votes, with more than 21,000 votes cast in the county. Harrington, a self-described progressive, won almost 40 percent of the vote, with Caccaviello behind her by about two percent.

"Obviously we're disappointed in the result," said Caccaviello to WAMC. "I already talked to Mrs. Harrington, that was a little bit ago and condeded the primary, and told her we'll take a couple days and think about our options from there on in."

Caccaviello was appointed to the DA seat by Republican Governor Charlie Baker in March after his predecessor David Capeless resigned. A report by Commonwealth Magazine later revealed that the appointment had been orchestrated between Capeless and Baker’s office for months before Capeless abruptly announced his departure from the office.

The third candidate, attorney Judith Knight, won just under a quarter of the vote. Both she and Caccaviello told WAMC that they had no plans to run in the general election at this time.

There is no Republican candidate running in November’s general election.
