The Grocery Manufacturers' Association and other industry groups are asking a federal appeals court to overturn a judge's refusal to block Vermont's first-in-the-nation law requiring the labeling of genetically modified food from taking effect on July 1, 2016.

In a filing Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Burlington, the association and other groups said they are appealing to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last month's order by U.S. District Court Judge Christina Reiss denying their request.

In her April 27 ruling, Reiss denied a state motion to dismiss the lawsuit, but refused to issue the preliminary injunction that had been sought by the industry groups.

The state finalized the GMO labeling rules last month.

The industry says the law imposes burdensome speech requirements on food manufacturers.
