Six members of the Massachusetts transportation board have agreed to resign at the request of Governor Charlie Baker.
A spokesman for the governor says the chairman of the seven-member MassDOT board, John Jenkins, has submitted his resignation. Baker's request came last week after a special advisory panel created by the governor recommended creating a new financial control board to oversee the MBTA.
During a discussion of his first 100 days in office Tuesday night, Baker says his administration is starting to review people who could fill the spots on the current board as they file legislation consistent with the report in order to create the financial board.
“We fully expect that it will be heard by the transportation committees,” Baker says. “Maybe by the ways and means committees. Our hope obviously would be that sometime before the legislature breaks for the summer, they will get what they consider to be an appropriate response to what we’ve submitted back to us for signature.”
Baker expects to fill the open spots within the next four weeks.
Baker and Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack plan to hold a press conference on the MBTA legislation at 1:15 Wednesday at the State House.
