Gillibrand Didn't Expect Republican Surge, But Feels Voter Anger

WAMC/Pat Bradley

New York U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand wasn’t on the ballot Tuesday, but several of her fellow Democrats were — and many lost their seats. Speaking Thursday in Amsterdam, Gillibrand was asked if she expected Republicans to be so successful on Election Day.

"Uh, you know, no, not really," Gillibrand said. "I mean, I was hopeful to the end. I really admire my colleagues and I really was very hopeful they would get reelected and in some cases, they didn't, and that was very personally disappointing  to me. But I very much have felt the voter frustration and anger around the state and around the country. It's real."

Republicans gained enough seats to take control of the Senate in the new Congress.
