Authorities say a former Hudson Valley town comptroller already facing prison time for stealing nearly $400,000 from taxpayers will be charged with pilfering another $150,000 while still on the job.
Dutchess County prosecutors tell the Poughkeepsie Journal that Fred Knapp is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday on an added count of grand larceny. Officials say the new charge stems from the theft of about $150,000 from the town of Beekman's accounts. Knapp was charged last May with stealing $390,000 while serving as comptroller for the town. He later pleaded guilty to grand larceny. He's scheduled to be sentenced on April 3. Knapp is free on bail. It could not be determined if he has a lawyer. His wife, Fran Knapp, is the former Democratic Dutchess County elections commissioner who resigned after pleading guilty in 2013 to two misdemeanors.
