Five Vermont Officers On Leave After Fatal Shooting

Vermont State Police say five officers who fired their weapons during a fatal standoff are on paid leave while an investigation continues.

Police say 32-year-old Michael Battles died early Friday from a single gunshot wound to the head in his home in Poultney. He was armed with a pair of BB guns.

Police were trying to arrest him for aggravated domestic assault.

The episode unfolded when police tried to talk to Battles about an attack on his girlfriend, who was chased into a neighbor's hard and brutalized when she tried to flee. The troopers opened fire when he came to a window and pointed a gun.

The troopers are identified as Sgt. Lyle Decker and Troopers Matthew Cannon, Eric Vitali, Christopher Brown and Michael Anderson.
