Fire Damages Unique Historic House

A fire late Sunday night caused significant damage to an historic house in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The Fire caused an estimated $80,000 damage to the Thurston Munson house at 60 Byers Street, according to the Springfield Fire Dept.

The house had often been described as one of the most unusual buildings in western Massachusetts.

Built in the 1950s, the house features curved interior walls, iron work, and an entire exterior wall made of glass. It had been vacant for decades.

Robert McCarroll of the Springfield Historic Preservation Trust Fund said news of the fire is “disheartening.”

"I don't have a sense of how badly damaged it is," said McCarroll, adding "Hopefully it is fixable."

Last year, the house was designated an historic district by the Springfield City Council.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
