Field Of American Flags In Northampton Honors Local Heroes

Lodge of Elks No. 997

Almost 200 American flags are in a solemn array on a field in Northampton, Massachusetts.

The Northampton Lodge of Elks No. 997 is hosting the display on its property on Spring Street.

Each 3-foot by 5-foot flag honors a specific person.

The display is part of a national program called “Field of Honor”   It originated with the Colonial Flag Company remembering the lives lost in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.  There are now about 100 such programs annually across the country. This is the inaugural year in Northampton.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Don Rippetoe, who is the president of the Elks Lodge in Northampton.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
