Dr. Steve Kress: State Of The Puffin

National Audubon Society

The puffin, a diminutive, penguin-like bird with a bright orange beak, is a much a part of Maine as blueberries, lobsters and lighthouses, but that was not always the case. In fact, the puffin almost disappeared from Maine until restoration effort began 41 summers ago, led by Steve Kress, the Vice President for Bird Preservation for the National Audubon Society and the head of the Puffin Project.
