Deal Announced To Move PawSox To Massachusetts With New Ballpark In Worcester

City of Worcester

A major change is coming to the sports team landscape in New England. After decades in Rhode Island, the Pawtucket Red Sox are moving across the state line into Massachusetts.

Worcester Mayor Joe Petty made the official announcement Friday.

" I am excited and pleased to announce the triple-a affiliate of the Boston Red Sox will be coming to the city of Worcester,"  Petty said to a cheering crowd packed into a conference room in Worcester City Hall.

He said an agreement has been signed between city officials and the ownership of the minor league team to build a new 10,000-seat ballpark, two hotels, and an apartment building on a former industrial site.

"The new baseball park and the corresponding development will total over $240 million in new development in the Canal District," said Petty.

State officials said Massachusetts has committed $36 million dollars to the project.

The move of the team is still subject to approval by Major League Baseball.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
