Cuomo Vetoes Brownfield Program Extension

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo

New York's governor has rejected legislation to extend current tax credits for brownfield cleanups for two more years:  Andrew Cuomo has plans to again propose revisions.

In his veto message,  Cuomo says the bill would have also appropriated another $100 million for the state Superfund cleanup program this year and authorized another $300 million in borrowing over the next two years.

He says the measure would have had "an unplanned, direct impact" on the current state financial plan.

The governor says his commitment to the Superfund program is "unwavering" and he'll put that funding and a brownfield extension with reforms in his upcoming budget plan.

Environmental groups have criticized the brownfield program for developers who clean and build on contaminated sites, saying it should target communities in need.
