A man was arrested Friday in connection with threats made against Jewish community sites in recent weeks, as schools, cemeteries and other locations have been dealing with a rash of threats and vandalism.
Juan Thompson, a former journalist, is accused of making threats to at least nine locations including the Anti-Defemation League's New York Office. Authorities say the threats were an attempt to smear an ex-girlfriend.
Before departing for a diplomatic trip to Israel, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo commented on the arrest calling the rash of threats and vandalism disturbing. He said the arrest "sends a strong message that anyone who targets and instills fear in our communities will be brought to justice."
Cuomo said state police will continue to work with the FBI and local law enforcement to investigate reported hate crimes.
Recently, dozens of headstones were toppled at a Jewish cemetery in Rochester. An Albany Jewish community center was targeted by bomb threats in January and February.
