New York Congressman Chris Gibson is one of the more than 300 Republican lawmakers and operatives who has signed a friend-of-the-court brief with the U.S. Supreme Court making a conservative case for same-sex marriage.
The amicus brief supports striking down same-sex marriage bans in four states, in cases the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear in April. In a statement about his signing onto the brief, Gibson says, in part, “Equal protection under the law and religious freedom are two of the most fundamental and critical principles enshrined in our founding documents. I have consistently advocated for equal protection under the law for those who seek to certify their unions in the face of the law.” Gibson, who says he will not seek re-election in 2016 but could run statewide two years later, defeated Sean Eldridge in November. Eldridge actively pushed for New York to legalize same-sex marriage. Other Republicans who have signed the brief include New York Congressman Richard Hanna; former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker.
