City Council President Knocks DA Over Investigations Of Springfield Cops

Fallout from the indictments of 14 current and former Springfield, Massachusetts police officers continues with harsh words between a city official and the Hampden County District Attorney.

Springfield City Council President Justin Hurst said DA Anthony Gulluni should resign over his failure to prosecute the cops who were indicted by a statewide grand jury for a 2014 assault on four men and attempts to cover it up.

"The idea that he can't do his own independent identification is really a disservice to the citizens of the city of Springfield," said Hurst.

Gulluni, in a statement from his spokesman, said Hurst has “demonstrated his lack of understanding of the events and actions by this office.”

The local prosecutor said he referred the case in 2017 to the state attorney general and U.S. Attorney’s Office, which un-earthed new evidence that resulted in the indictments.

The FBI examined video from a bank drive-through that was missed by local investigators, according to MassLive.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
