Although August is usually a time for vacations, it’s a busy period in Berkshire County politics, according to Pittsfield, Massachusetts Mayor Linda Tyer. WAMC asked Tyer about her thoughts on the Berkshire District Attorney’s race. The first-term Democrat also shared her reaction to a recent Boston Magazine article’s portrayal of Pittsfield, and delivered an update on recreational marijuana in the city. She also described the city’s involvement in a study to explore the installation of a solar powered microgrid that would protect crucial municipal infrastructure in the event of disaster. Tyer began by discussing a citizens oversight committee for the city’s police department, refuting claims that it doesn’t go far enough to check the force.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018, following stints at WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Western Massachusetts, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. His free time is spent with his cat Harry, experimental electronic music, and exploring the woods.
