Central Vermont Cleaning Up After Flooding

Cleanup is underway in Barre and areas of central Vermont after flooding on Sunday led to the evacuation of about 15 city residents and left streets closed or covered with mud.

A fast-moving storm dropped between four and six inches of rain Sunday night in central Vermont causing severe flooding in the Barre and Plainfield areas.

Governor Peter Shumlin, Barre Mayor Thomas Lauzon and emergency management officials provided an update on the flooding Monday afternoon as damage assessments were underway.  If storm damage exceeds  $1 million the areas could qualify for a federal disaster declaration .

While there were no known injuries in the flooding there were multiple evacuations and teams rescued five people from two cars that had been surrounded by water in separate areas of Barre.
