A fund established to support the legacy of an ardent activist for civil rights and social justice has announced awards to several western Massachusetts organizations.

The Carlos Vega Fund for Social Justice is giving a total of $8,485 in so-called mini-grants to nine organizations in the Holyoke area.

This is the eighth year the fund has made grant awards.  It was established in 2010 to honor Vega on his 60th birthday.  He died two years later.

Carlos’ son, State Rep. Aaron Vega, is a member of the fund’s advisory board.  He spoke with WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
