The Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Music Director has been named Musical America’s 2018 Artist of the Year.

Andris Nelsons joins the ranks of Leonard Bernstein, Igor Stravinsky, Benjamin Britten, Yo-Yo Ma and Anne-Sophie Mutter in receiving the honor from Musical America.

The organization, founded as a weekly newspaper in 1898, is hailed as the bible of the industry.

Nelsons joined the Boston Symphony in 2011, becoming music director in May 2013.  His contract at the BSO has been extended through 2022. The BSO’s summer home is at Tanglewood in the Berkshires.

Nelsons is currently working on recording a cycle of Shostakovich’s 15 symphonies with BSO.  The first two won Grammy Awards for Best Orchestral Performance.

The award will be presented in a special ceremony at Carnegie Hall.
