Beacon Parents Come With Demands To A Cancelled BOE Meeting

A few hundred parents and others showed up for a Beacon City School District Board of Education meeting Monday night. There was no meeting, but concerned community members stayed and held one of their own.

The regularly scheduled Beacon Board of Education meeting at Beacon High School was cancelled as only three of the nine trustees turned out, so there was no quorum. More than 350 parents, teachers and taxpayers packed the auditorium, having planned to demand that district officials answer to the community about a number of issues. Some residents say change could come by electing new school board trustees in May to three open seats. Beacon parent Meredith Heuer says she is running and will continue to press for change.

“We will do a regular action of picketing the district office with our demands,” Heuer said.

She says no date is yet set for the picket. Another parent recently filed a petition with the New York State Department of Education, calling for an investigation and removal of the superintendent.
