Albany Parks Host Halloween Drive-Thrus Amid COVID-19

Halloween looked a little different in Albany this year. To encourage social distancing and discourage indoor parties, the city of Albany hosted a drive-thru and walk-thru candy and pumpkin give-away Saturday in 11 city parks.

In Washington Park, families collected bags of candy and pumpkins.

“What are you dressed as?”

“Winnie from Hocus Pocus.”

University at Albany senior Andria Nelys Parra was volunteering, saying she was hoping to brighten the day for kids who have been stuck at home during COVID-19.

“It’s their one time they get to enjoy, be kids, eat candy all day. So why not give back,” Parra said.

Rose and Caesar Fournier were happy to get their three kids outside among friends.

“They’re virtual students as well so they really haven’t seen their friends,” Rose said. “So trying to be as social as can be, while distancing at the same time – it’s been kind of hard.”

With coronavirus cases on the rise in Albany County, Halloween will likely not be the last improvised holiday. But the Fourniers say at least they have enough candy to continue bribing their kids into being safe.
