Albany Times Union columnist Paul Grondahl, a titan of journalism in the Capital Region for more than three decades, will leavethe paper Feb. 17 to run the New York State Writers Institute at the University at Albany, where he earned a master's in English.

“Paul is one of the best-known and most-loved writers in our community. For more than 30 years, he has been an award-winning reporter and columnist for the Albany Times Union. In addition to his work as a journalist, Paul has published three books, and for many years he taught a popular course in our Africana Studies department, as well as writing workshops for high school students,” Darrell Wheeler, interim provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at the University at Albany, said in an email to the campus community.

“UAlbany has been home to the New York State Writers Institute since its founding in 1983 by Pulitzer-Prize winning novelist William Kennedy. The Institute draws the best writers in America to Albany for readings and seminars with our students. Its outstanding national reputation brings a great deal of prestige to our university and our community.”

The Times Union reported that Grondahl will still contribute columns to the paper on occasion.
