The bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Albany will resign in February, resolving a disciplinary matter after he directed clergy not to perform same-sex marriages in 2018.
According to the diocese, Bishop William Love instructed clergy not to perform same-sex marriages in November 2018, despite the unions being authorized by the Church’s General Convention earlier that year.
Presiding Bishop Michael Curry announced on Saturday that Bishop Love would step down February 1st following a one-month terminal sabbatical.
The diocese wished Love well in his retirement, promises a smooth transition to new leadership, and says the presiding bishop “expresses sadness for the pain that has been experienced across the theological spectrum."
