A snow emergency begins Tuesday night in the city of Albany.

The city typically declares snow emergencies for plowing purposes. Starting at 8 p.m. Tuesday, all residents must park their cars on the even-numbered side of the street. At 8 p.m. Wednesday, all vehicles must be moved to the odd-numbered side. Mayor Kathy Sheehan encourages people to stay off the roads whenever possible.

“We have pedestrians that are walking in the streets, because people have not had the opportunity to keep up with the snow on their sidewalks – that makes it very dangerous and treacherous for drivers," notes Sheehan. "So we encourage drivers to be aware.”

Sheehan says those who fail to move their vehicles to the correct side of the street risk being ticketed or towed. In a press release, city officials say additional parking will be available in the following lots:

Arbor Hill / Sheridan Hollow

  • Parking area adjoining Arbor Hill softball field (North Lark Street)
  • 230 Colonie Street
  • 178 Colonie Street
  • Ten Broeck Mansion
  • Albany Parking Authority's Quackenbush Garage (Limited availability — residents must take a ticket upon entering, and confirm their last name and plate number to customer service upon exiting)

Pine Hills

  • Ridgefield Park (Patridge Street entrance)
  • Woodlawn Park Little League
  • Waterson Park (Westland Hills, Colvin Avenue entrance)
  • Washington Park

South End

  • Krank Park area
  • Franklin Street (Between Schuyler Street and Bassett Street)
  • Lincoln Park

Center Square / Mansion

  • 77 Philip Street
  • 88 Philip Street

North Albany

  • North Second Street and North Third Street (Above Pearl Street)
  • Parking area across from North Albany American Legion Post

West End

  • Bleecker Stadium
  • North side of Livingston Avenue (Opposite Judson Street parking lot)

The season’s first snowstorm, which started Sunday afternoon, could dump a total of up to two feet in some parts of the Capital Region. Sheehan says some parts of Albany saw 14 inches by Monday morning. Albany shuttered city buildings to non-essential employees and the public on Monday.
More information on the snow emergency can be found at the city's Department of General Services website
