The Albany Common Council Law Committee meets tonight to discuss repealing the new trash tax law. The public is invited.
In January, the Common Council passed, at the request of Mayor Kathy Sheehan, a trash collection tax that applies only to two-, three-, and four-unit homes.
The committee will consider 11th Ward Council Member Judd Krasher's Local Law B of 2016, which would repeal the tax.
Krasher says there is significant concern that the tax will result in rent increases which will be disproportionately felt among Albany's poor.
"We can do so much better than sloppy public policy that targets low-income families and our mom-and-pop landlords. That is not the way to build a sustainable economic development policy in the city of Albany."
The meeting begins at 5:30 this evening at City Hall.
