After Suspending Anchorages Proposal, USCG Workshop Is Under Way

WAMC, Allison Dunne

A two-day workshop gets under way Tuesday in Poughkeepsie. It’s part of a study the U.S. Coast Guard directed after having suspended the rulemaking process in June for a proposal of up to 10 additional anchorage sites between Yonkers and Kingston.

The Coast Guard directed the Ports and Waterways Safety Assessment, or PAWSA, and the workshop is part of this process, to identify major waterway safety hazards, estimate risk levels and evaluate potential mitigation measures. A group of waterway users and stakeholders will conduct the workshop. Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano says there are too few municipal officials taking part. He says that of the 45 participants the Coast Guard selected, three local municipal officials were invited. Spano says the Hudson River Waterfront Alliance, which contains elected leaders from 33 Hudson Valley municipalities and counties, should not have been excluded.
