After 50 Years Of Reporting In Western Massachusetts, TV Newsman Ray Hershel Retires

WAMC

Ray Hershel, whose face is familiar to at least two generations of television viewers in western Massachusetts, is signing off today.

Hershel is retiring and bringing the curtain down on a 50-year career in broadcast journalism – all of it spent at the same station in Springfield.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Hershel on the eve of his retirement.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
