51% Show #1371

On this week’s 51%, we hear about a local effort to raise awareness about human trafficking. An Internet sensation goes on tour to share fans' stories, and a young woman leads "Hipsters of Nature." I’m Allison Dunne and this is 51%.

Over the Columbus Day holiday in October some local schoolgirls in the Albany, New York area opted not to take the day off.  51%'s Dave Lucas reports they came away from a workshop at the Academy of the Holy Names having learned an important lesson.

CHICAGO (AP) — The American Cancer Society is revising its advice on when women should start getting mammograms and how often. The updated guidelines recommend annual breast cancer screenings at age 45 instead of 40 and switching to every other year at age 55. The update moves the society closer to guidelines from an influential task force that recommends starting routine screening at age 50. It's not a one-size-fits-all recommendation. Both groups say women's preferences for when to be scanned should be considered. The advice is for women at average risk of breast cancer. Doctors generally recommend more intensive screening for higher-risk women. The update also drops a recommendation for routine physical breast exams by doctors. The guidelines were published toward the end of October in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

As the world struggles with climate change, a young woman - environmentalist Beatrice Dossah- is getting creative in spreading the message of conservation and recycling. She's leading an effort to encourage other young people in Ghana to follow her lead and has organized 'Hipsters of Nature' to educate her peers about the message. This report is brought to us by DW correspondent Issac Kaledzi.

We now turn to a 51% segment called “Force of Nature,” from Dr. SharonUfberg. She is co-founder of the personal development/wellness company, Borrowed Wisdom. As a freelance journalist, she blogs for The Huffington Post and lives in California's Napa Valley. This week, she interviews Internet sensation Alex G, who has built a music career on YouTube over the past five years, with nearly 1.5 million subscribers and 194 million views. In the last year, Alex G began to reevaluate her influence and what it means to be a leader, which led her to create the "Share Your Story" movement in hopes of inspiring vulnerability, courage, and connectedness among her followers. Her first headlining tour began in September in Phoenix, Arizona. She heads to Germany, France and the UK in November. Ufberg caught up with Alex G just before the tour.

That was Colorado-raised, Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Alex G, who is on tour with "Share Your Story," speaking with Dr. Sharon Ufberg for 51%'s "Force of Nature." Force of Nature is recorded at the InnerVoice Network.
