51% Show #1331

Deb Kravitz

On this week’s 51%, we’ll hear about efforts to address sexual assault on campus. Also on this week's show, the youngest woman to ever serve in Congress is sworn in, and we’ll hear about the female side of football, when it comes to Super Bowl ads and on the field.

California, like several other states, has been working to address the issue of sexual assault on campus. In September, California passed a “Yes means Yes” law which essentially says that on college campuses, students have to give and receive affirmative consent before any sexual activity. Liz Mak from KALW reports on what the change looks like at the University of California, Berkeley.

Republican Elise Stefanik, at the age of 30, is the youngest woman ever to serve in Congress. She held a ceremonial swearing-in recently in her home district in northern New York. 51%’s Pat Bradley reports.

With Super Bowl XLIX February 1, a lot is already being said about one of the most anticipated parts of the game – the commercials. A Harris Interactive survey showed that 66% of women compared with 45% of men watch the big game as much for the ads as the action on the field. Kevin Paul Scott is co-founder of Atlanta-based ADDO Worldwide, a brand consulting firm. I spoke with him about how the ads go after female viewers.

No doubt, a good many of those new ads will make a play for the female audience. That was Kevin Paul Scott, co-founder of ADDO Worldwide, an Atlanta-based brand consulting firm.

We go now from the ads to the football field itself. The Northeast Rebels are a group of women who are not afraid to tackle the opposition. Lucia Constantine has this report.

And that’s our show for this week. Thanks to Katie Britton for production assistance. Our executive producer is Dr. Alan Chartock. Our theme music is Glow in the Dark by Kevin Bartlett. This show is a national production of Northeast Public Radio.
