51% Show #1302

On this week’s 51%, you’ll hear more from the first openly transgender employee of an Orthodox Jewish institution. We’ll also tell you about a push to rank college response to sexual assault.

And, you’ll meet a woman who creates wearable art with a message about America’s obsession with body image.

Professor Jay Ladin made headlines around the world when after years of teaching literature at Yeshiva University he returned to the Orthodox Jewish campus as a woman, Joy Ladin. Her new book is “Through the Door of Life: A Jewish Journey Between Genders”. In her story, Ladin wrestles with both the practical problems of gender transition and the larger moral, spiritual, and philosophical questions that arise. Ladin is a Fulbright Scholar and the author of seven books. She is the first openly transgender employee of an Orthodox Jewish institution. 51%’s Joe Donahue spoke with Ladin during her recent visit to Albany, New York. This is part two of a two-part interview.

And now we’ll stay on campus, but move from Yeshiva to campuses across the U.S., and to a different topic – sexual assault.

The following is a production of This Land Press. For more information, visitthislandpress.com.

American women's fear of body hair and the pains they take to be rid of it reveal much about our attitude toward beauty. Erica Rasmussencreates clothing using hair and other objects that will eventually decompose. Her wearable art confronts our history of body image obsession and fears of aging and physical decline. She talks about her work with Abby Wendle.
