Canadian authorities say four people face charges after a couple from northern New York was held hostage in the Quebec city of Magog.

Police say James Helm and Sandra Helm, who are in their 70s, were found safe Tuesday. A fifth person was released pending further investigation.

New York State Police and the FBI launched a search after the Helms, who live in Franklin County, were reported missing Monday morning.

The FBI's Albany office released the following statement Wednesday.

"The FBI continues to work the international kidnapping investigation out of Moira, NY.  We are coordinating with our partners from NYS Police, Surete du Quebec, and various other law enforcement agencies regarding arrests. We are unable to provide any further information at this time, but will release information in the coming days as this case moves forward. Thank you for your patience as we work with our partners to ensure those responsible are brought to justice."

The U.S.-Canada border has been closed due to the pandemic.
