2 Boys Hospitalized After Spending Frigid Night On Mountain

NYS DEC

Two young boys remain hospitalized after they and their mother became lost on New York's highest peak and were rescued by forest rangers.

The Cuomo administration says the Cai family of Potsdam, New York, hiked to the 5,344-foot summit of Mount Marcy in the Adirondacks late Saturday afternoon. They got lost when they headed back down.

Cai called 911 for help and the state Department of Environmental Conservation was alerted. Forest rangers reached the summit around 9:30 p.m., but couldn't find the family.

A state police helicopter spotted them near Marcy's summit late Sunday morning. The helicopter first rescued the boys, then went back for their mother.

Ning Cai emailed  The Associated Press on Monday saying her sons, ages 7 and 11, will be released from the hospital in Lake Placid "probably by the weekend."

Cai was treated for cold weather-related injuries and released.
